Scoliosis of the Back
Scoliosis is an abnormal curvature of the spine. It is usually congenital, in other words, people are usually born with it. Typically, scoliosis is not the basis for disability by itself. However, over time, the abnormal curvature can cause pressure on the discs of the spine that can lead to disc protrusions or herniation. It is usually the disc herniation that can cause disabling limitations of function although scoliosis by itself can be limiting. In order for you be considered disabled on the basis of your back problems, you need to be seen by a specialist in this type of condition such as an orthopedic surgeon. A specialist will be able to tell you if there are any treatment options available to you and will be able to tell the judge if your condition is severe enough to cause disabling limitations of function. If you have a herniated disc in your spine, you could experience chronic pain that prevents both standing and sitting for prolonged periods of time. If you would need to change positions between sitting and standing frequently throughout the work day, but still would not be able to complete a whole 8 hour work day without experiencing interruptions to your concentrate so severe that you would not be able to complete even simple tasks in a timely manner, then you could be considered eligible for disability benefits.
