Benefits For a Child of a Disabled or Retired Person

If you are eligible for disability benefits your children should be eligible to receive a monthly check for benefits based on your work record. This is true for biological, adopted or step children. In some cases a dependent grandchild might also qualify. The amount of the benefit depends on how many work credits you have. To receive benefits, the child must be unmarried and be:

  • under age 18; or
  • 18-19 years old and a full-time student (no higher than grade 12); or
  • 18 or older and have a disability that started before age 22.
