A number of different medical conditions can cause swelling in the lower extremities. Chronic heart failure, kidney disease, and chronic venous insufficiency can cause lower extremity edema. Knee or ankle arthritis or injuries can cause swelling in the areas affected. If you have swelling in your lower extremities for any reason, it could cause you to need to rest away from the work station for greater than an hour out of the working portion of the work day. If that is the case, then you might be eligible for disability benefits for that reason.
It is very important that you are compliant with your doctor’s advice regarding your lower extremity swelling. For instance, if your doctor recommends that you use compression stockings then you should do so. If you are obese, do what you can to lose weight and make sure your doctor knows about your weight loss efforts.
