I have been diagnosed with Post Polio Syndrome, (PPS), and I want to know what my chances are in Maryland to get SSDI. What is so disabiling about PPS is fatigue for me. Secondarily is muscle and joint
pain all the time. I was a State and Nationally Certified Massage
Theripist and no longer have the stamina to give even 1 massage. I
tried going back to my former profession as a travel agent but
regularly fell asleep at my desk. Additionally, I have what I call
"Brain Fog", in that I feel as though I've walked into a brick wall. I
can't focus my attention and language becomes difficult ... the word is
on the tip of my tounge and then my mind goes blank. I've had 1 or 2
close calls falling asleep at the wheel. There are other details but
this is a thumb nail sketch of what my life has become. The only thing
that helps is getting plenty of rest and I'm quickly learning how to conserve my energy. In order to do this I resigned from my job
this past August. I have a Survivor Annuity from the Federal Gov't
which is approximately 24,000.00 which makes retiring do-able but it's
very tight. I am 47 years old and have worked long enough to have
enough credits. I am going to apply for SSDI because I think I qualify,
but I want to know what you think my chances are. The whole idea of
being "interviewed" is frightening to me. In addition I want to know of
any lawyers you recommend in the Baltimore area. Thank you for your
attention to my questions. Reply by Paul You should
either work, or file for disability, or both. Be sure your doctors are
ready to back you up. Email me directly at paul@carolina-disabilty.com
and I will suggest a couple of attorneys. Take care and good luck. |

I
am 53 years old and was diagnois with Post Polio Syndrome and
Fibromyalgia on 10/22/01. I have worked since I was 18 years old. I
paid in Social Security all but the last 7 years. I have been operating
a home day care for the last 7 years. I am not able to work any more.
My doctor advised me to stop the home day care. I am taking a good bit
of medicine just to ease the pain and to help me sleep. I want to know
if I qualify for SSDI, or not? I live in South Carolina. Thank you! Reply by Paul
You have to be very careful. You might get SSI if you are disabled and
have a low enough family income; but it is almost always better to get
Social Security Disability. If you have reported profits on your
business and paid taxes, you will be eligible to apply. If you have not
done this every year, get a good lawyer early. You might be able to
ammend returns. Very tricky. Give me your city and I will either help
you or get you the name of a few attorneys. Take care. |

I am an 18 year old male adult and have never held a job in my life. I
completed high school and is having a hard time gaing employment. I
applied everywhere and even went though agenys but it resulted me in no
where. I can't really say that these employers didn't hire me because I
was obese. I figured inturn they could have said that others had more
experience than I did and that was the bases for not hireing me.
Anyways I am not in College because I can not afford it and I am
looking for work and can not find any. Could I be able to get SSI
benefits base on this. Is obesity considered to be a disbality? |

Obesity is potentially disabling, if it causes such impairments as to
prohibit all work activity. Carrying around a lot of extra weight for
long years often leads to breakdown of multiple body systems, such as
the knees, heart, hips. If you have sleep apnea, which is common in
very obese people, if it is not treated it can lead to brain damage. It
is possible, but would be unusual for an 18 year old to have these end
organ damages to the point of disability. If you don't have them yet,
and are massively obese, there is a good chance you will qualify one
day, though of course we hope not. Obesity by itself in a person who is capable of doing a job is not disabling. For
college, you should look at Pell Grants, which usually pay full tuition
for tech colleges. You also might look at Vocational Rehabilitation,
which will sometimes support you in your educational efforts. Of
course you should do something aggressive about your obesity problem;
that is the best way out of your troubles. I know it is not easy, but
the stakes are pretty high, so the effort is worth it. Atkins,
swimming, Overeaters Anonymous,, other exercise, and many other things.
Certainly if you have not tried them a judge would give you little
sympathy. |
