Blood Pressure Problems

Social-Security-Disability-Forum » Blood Pressure Problems

If you want to describe your situation and ask if you might have a disability claim, scroll to the bottom of this screen until you see a box, and tell us about yourself there.

Most people don't notice the following, so I am going to start making it in larger and larger type until most people start following the suggestions. If you are the sort of person who reads instructions, I apologize:
If you want a high quality answer, please be sure to include these facts about yourself:
1. Age.
2. Grade you finished in school.
3. The sort of work you have done.
4. What your diagnoses are; that is, what problems the doctor says you have.
5. What limitations you have because of your problems. This means what you cannot do at work because of your problems. Problems standing, sitting, using your hands, concentrating should be mentioned, as well as any problems attending work because of any psychological condition.
6. Your city and state.
7. Any other information that you believe is relevant.
8. Your specific question.

I am a 53 year old female in Alabama who has been working full time as a Nurse practitioner for 31 years ( no problem with having enough "points" there). Three years ago, I developed shooting pains in my right leg..enough to cause me to miss alot of work.Diagnosis: Spinal Stenosis due to DJD. Pain off and on, not enough to keep me down. A year and a half ago, I developed a "Neuropathy". Despite brain and spine MRIs, nobody can give a better diagnosis..blurred vision, muscle weakness in the legs and arms, muscle spasms, urinary incontinence (yuck) and worsening of the leg pain. This has progressed to the point since Nov. 2000 where I need help dressing, walking, etc. I can walk some days for short period of time with a cane. I take Talwin and Flexeril for pain. I filed in February 2001 for SS Disability, telling them truthfully that having been a Nurse for 31 years, how can I work when I cannot walk, or see clearly..never mind all the other symptoms. My doctor wants me to have another MRI of the spine to show disease progression. I do not have insurance, and I sure do not have an extra $2000 for an MRI. I called three hospitals in my area to see if I can get a lower charge...no way..I called the Regional Disability office last week and they said my claim has not yet been assigned to an examiner. Questions: At my age and my symptoms, what do you think my chances are of being approved? Will the fact that I did not have a second MRI as advised by the doc have any bearing? He documented that I wanted but could not afford one. Do you know a lawyer in the Gadsden, Alabama area whom you might recommend? Thank you!

Reply by Paul You have a pretty good chance. If you are not working, you certainly need to apply. Ideally you need to get as many tests as you can, but your inability to get the MRI might not make any difference; it depends on what the rest of the evidence looks like.

I have uncontrollable high blood pressure. I quit work back in Dec of 2000. My doctor has me on 3 types of BP medicine, Hyzzar 100/50, Plendil and lopressor. My last visit to my doctor my BP read 180/121...now it goes up and down but for the most part it stays up that high. I am 29 yrs old is there any information you could provide me with would be great!

thanks

Reply by Paul Of course you know that you need to get tthat blood pressure down; make sure you are doing absolutely everything to do that. High blood pressure without any symptoms is not disabling. But with pressure that high after aggressive medication, I suspect that you are having symptoms, and probably problems with other body systems. If so, you might consider filing. You should either work, or pursue a claim, or sometimes both, but never neither. Take care.

If you have no signs or symptoms, no. Disability turns on limitations caused by your health problems.
