I am 47 years old and going on Disability. I had a heart/double lung transplant 10 years ago and am getting too tired to work. I was wondering if I can draw Social Security Disability benefits and draw medical retirement from my job?

David, with rare exceptions you can draw both Social Security Disablity and medical or disability retirement from your job at the same time, provided you can convince everybody that you are disabled.

The few exceptions, mostly involving government workers who have pensions that are intended to substitute for Social Security.

Dear Expert - I'm going to retire soon with a pension of over 2,000.00 per month. I must take early retirement (age 55) because of my condition. How long before I retire can I apply for SSDI (I make over $4,000 a month) and would I even be allowed to receive benefits because of the amount of my monthly pension income? Thanking you in advance for your response to this inquiry. - Sue

If you are disabled you can apply for Social Security immediately.

If you are not, you can apply for retirement at 60 if you are a widow and 62 if not.

Assuming you have worked enough to be eligible for Social Security Disability, which you probably have, your other pension income, unless it is a fairly rare type of public entity pension, should have no effect on Social Security disability. Your pension provider will know if your pension is one of those. Take care.
