I recieved a letter saying I was entitled to a period of disability beginning July 26, 1999 and to disability insurance benefits under Sections 216(i) and 223. What does this mean?

If you are awarded a "period of disability" it means that, when figuring any later disabilty or retirement check, the 0's that you earn during the period will not be counted against you in figuring your average wage, which is used to figure your benefit amount.

This is an important award. If your earings record has a lot of 0's in it, your monthly benefit will be very low.

"Disability insurance benefits" means a monthly Social Security check. These benefits, unlike SSI, will not be reduced by most forms of income or resorces that you might have. (They can be reduced because of railroad retirement benefits, worker's compensation in some states, and certain pensions).
