Question: Will Calling My Congression...

Social-Security-Disability-Forum » Question: Will Calling My Congressional Representative or Senator Help?

Can a senator or congressman get a case that is stalled moving again?
-Sometimes, particularly if they have a lot of seniority, or if they work hard at their jobs. Some do a good job of this, and some do not. There are special phone numbers that only senators and congressmen have access to. There is no harm in trying.

Does his work in your case make it more likely that you will win?
-I am not sure. It sometimes might make a slight difference. The employees are protected by the civil service system, and there is not much a senator or congressman can do to make them issue a particular decision. Again, it probably does no harm.

Why not just get my congressman to take care of me? Why bother with an attorney?
-An attorney's mere say so would probably have even less influence on the desire of the Administration to pay you.
-But a good one can do four things that a congressman cannot or will not: He will get missing medical evidence. He will produce evidence that will influence the outcome of the case. He will appeal the case if it is not decided properly. And he will be sure that you present every fact that you need to present to win. When these things happen, your chances of winning often go way up.

hi my name is bill everett , i have copd yesterday icontacted my state rep.in n.c. concearning my dis. case. i am on the waiting list for a admin hearing . my question is how fast can they hurry things along and with two dr. letters supporting my dis. do you think they could get them to make a desision without a oral hearing?

Reply by Paul:

You could have a hundred doctors supporting you, and if they do not make the right findings you will be denied.

If you do not have an attorney who has reviewed the entire record and become familiar with your vocational situation and done everything necessary to be sure the record is complete, you do not want a hearing yet.

The time to a hearing varies around NC from about 5 to 10 months. Contacting your congressman will not move you to the head of the line, but it will help ensure that you will not be forgotten.

Take care and good luck.
