I am a 36 year old female that lives in Montana and have worked since I was 14 except the 6 years that I missed 85-91 when I dislocated my right ulna and had 9 surgeries to so called fix it. The Dr. screwed the ulna and radius together and cut a portion of the ulna out of my arm and then totally fused my wrist as a result of this I cannot bend my wrist and my fingers do not function very well at all on that hand. I have also had my right knee rebuilt and broke my left ankle and had to have it rebuit also, but these are not the worst problems. In 1999 I had a fifty pound block of metal fall on my foot while at work that did not cause any fractures but it turned into a horrible disease called Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy-(RSD). This causes unbearable burning and stinging as well as hyper sensitivity, swelling, changes in the skin, joint stiffness, and many other horrible painful things. I have had numerous epidural blocks and bertillium blocks, finally they did a Lumbar Sympathectomy which made my foot feel better but, the Dr. did not check to see if this stuff had spread up my leg, which it had so they did another Sympathectomy that did not help. Now I have terrible muscle spasms and depression to go along with everything else. I had an intrathecal pump implanted in March which has made it so I am not in 10+ pain but I am still in an enormous amount of pain. I was sent to one of SS's Dr.'s for another examination (neurological). Do you think I will have alot of problems getting SSD? The Doc that I saw for them told me that he was going to write and tell them that in his opinion I will never be able to return to work. I also dislocated my other wrist while at the same job. they want to do surgery on it but I do not want that because this disease spreads really bad and it will attack weak spots. It has already spread to my other foot and it is now all the way up my leg and in my hips. This disease is so painful that there are documented cases of people commiting suicide because they can't stand the pain. I cannot stand, sit, walk, lay or be in any one position for a period of time without being in extreme pain. Do you think that I have a chance of getting on Disability ? Also, I am on Workmans Compensation, can you tell me a little bit on how this is going to go if I do get on SSD? Thank You

Reply by Paul You certainly should be found disabled; but of course that does not mean you will get an award. Perhaps now, and certainly if you are denied at the initial level, I would get a good attorney. There is sometimes an offset if you are drawing Worker's Compensation. In that situation a good attorney can often avoid such an offset.

Where do I find information about social security
disability for a person with reflex sympathetic
dystrophy syndrome? I want the most current
information with a draft of the Social Security
Rulings on RSDS/CRPS. I am currently going
through a "review" of my social security disability benefits, and I really need to know
what to do to help my case. HELP! This is
causing me so much stress that it is exacerbating
my symptoms severely. Thank you for you help!

The Social Security Rulings are special documents issued by the Administration that deal with policy interpretation. There is no Social Security Ruling that deals with RSDS. I will take that part of your question to be another way of asking the second question, that is, what should I do to help make sure they continue my benefits.

The answer to that question is, be sure you are going to your doctor regularly; be sure he or she will back you up fully; Be sure he knows and sees all of your signs and symptoms; and get all of your medical records together and sit down with them and with an attorney who mostly handles Social Security cases.

If that did not answer, ask again.

Possibly. You need to talk to a local attorney. Not only do you have to have a disease, it must be of a certain level of severity, and you must be able to prove it through doctors.

I am a 44 year old male who has been dianosed with RSD by 5 physicians. The RSD was due to a injury to my left index finger. I am in constant cronic pain in my left hand and arm, and I deal with swelling as well. I am on a large amount of medication. 3600mg. of Gabapentin, 500 mg of Vicodin, 60 mg. of cymbalta,480 mg of Ultraset, and 25 mg of Amitylin. On a daily basis I deal with the side effects of these medications (dizziness, drosiness, memory loss, and some vision problems). I went through 2 series of Nerve Blocks with little or no reduction in pain. I start my 3rd series of Blocks next month. I filed for Social Security Disablity this month (06/05). Do you think my chances are good on being approved for benefits?

Anonymous: I really cannot understand where you are in your case well enough to say anything. I assume that you have a lawyer; he is more familiar with the essential facts of your case than I am, so his opinion on this point would be better than mine. Take care and good luck.

If you can show that your pain is so significant that you cannot attend to or concentrate on work on a predictable basis, you have a shot at it. But you have to prove it, of course, and you need to see all the medicals in order to be able to say more about your chances. Take care.

I am 28 years old and I have RSD. I applied for disability benefits in 2003 due to my chronic pains and lack of concentration and my limitations. I was found disabled on the day that i went before the ALJ, boy was i in terrible pain that day they had to actually wheel me out of there in one of their office chairs. I am unable to do much of anything any more.I have trouble with my pelvic bone had knee surgery,I am unable to sit or stand for a long period of time for no longer than 10 minutes at the most and i'm not allowed to carry over 10lbs. I don't even get a good nights sleep due to the fact that i can only sleep on my right side because my left side is the side that i have all the trouble with and since i swell on that side if i lay on my back or stomach i am kinda laying humped up.I understand how it is living with RSD or Complex Regional Pain Syndrome. I take over 9 different pills a day.23 all together
