My husband has end stage Cirrhosis. He has worked hard all his life and now he cannot get out of bed. Why did he get rejected for SSD when his doctor says he can never be self supporting again? |

I always hesitate to say anything so definite as this, but your husband should never have been turned down!! Please get an attorney and appeal your case. If you need for me to suggest a local attorney, email me by clicking here and tell me your city and state. Please be aware of any time limits on any notices that the Administration sent you. |

I was diagnosed with Hep C in 97. Histological stage III with extensive portal fibrosis. I had been ill for a long time with incorrect diagnosis. By the time I was correctly diagnosed I was unable to function in my work and increasingly unable to handle my daily routine. I began rebetron therapy and could not get off the couch. Experienced extreme fatigue, nausea, headaches, joint aches, depression, insomnia, shortness of breath and many more. At the end of treatment my Hep was negative but still today experience many symptoms and relapse is very common in 86% of patients within a year. I am currently awaiting to see if virus is active again. HepC is a virus as severe as AIDS, there is no cure and the government seems ill informed about this growing problem. In the US 8 to 10,000 people die each year from complications or awaiting transplants. My medical diagnosis and treatment also triggered extreme depression, panic and agoraphobia. I do not drive anywhere and am limited to my property unless someone is with me. My quality of life stinks and is affecting the entire family. I have seen the SSD consultant already, and according to the denial they stated that my mental condition was considered to be severe, however they denied my claim. They stated that I was able to work for 2 hrs at a time and away from people in quiet settings as an office clerk. I was an Office manager responsible for outside sales and complete management of office. I am uncapable of performing these functions at this time. What can I do to prove my case?? My psychiatrist will support mental disability but I was told I should have 2 Drs. support. I have not worked since Dec 1998 and things are getting progressivley worse which aggrevates my mental capacity. |

You have a case that you certainly need to appeal. I agree that Hepatitis C is one of the more serious diseases, and one that gets little publicity. There are a lot of people that have the diagnosis, without severe symptoms, and a lot that have even minimal liver damage, but severe symptoms. It is tricky distinguishing the two sorts of people, and the Administration has trouble doing so. You need to get a social security attorney and appeal your case. If you want a couple of names, please click here to e-mail me your city and stateand I will try to get a couple of names for you. Or you can call every lawyer in the yellow pages who emphasizes this practice, and consider hiring the lawyer (not the paralegal) who you can talk to and who seems to understand the disease well. Don't jump to quick and hire the first one, even if I give you a name. |

I am 32 years old and was tole on November 9, 2001 that I have Primary Bilirary Cirrhosis. I haven't been able to work for the past two months, is it possible that I may have a claim for disability. My doctor told me that he wanted me on temporary disability for now but I have been told there is no such thing as temporary disability. Would it be worth a try to file a claim with Social security for disability. Reply by Paul That can be a serious disease. If there is any possibility that the condition might last for more than a year, you should file to get the process started. If you are able to go back to work, great, do that. |

I will be 59 in December. I applied for Social Security Disability due to Hip Replacement pain and complications from Hepatitis C treatment. My records reflect 15 months of blood testing, yearly liver biospy, thyroid and kidney tests and non-responder to Hep-C treatment. I have suffered with fatigue, joint and muscle pain In addition, I walk with a limp although the hip replacment was a success. Social Security records indicate June 2003 as date of disability. They are requesting a physical exam by their doctor. I'm sure my doctor's have notified SS that I did not respond to the Hepatitis C treatment, leaving me a candidate for a clinical trial. However, I do not know if the doctor's consider me totally disabled. For some odd reason, doctor's are reluctant to label their patient's disabled. Should I consider looking in the "want ads.? |

Well, yes; look, and if you can get work, great. But you might also consider a disability claim. At 59 a disability claim is a lot easier than it is at younger ages. If you have no work skills, the hip alone might be enough at that age. I am sorry about you not being a responder to the hepatitis treatment. As you know, while that means that the hepatitis c will continue to damage your liver, it is also possible that it will continue to function for a long time; but it is also possible that you will develop more serious problems. And even if the liver functions fairly well, some people with hepatitis c have a generalized fatigue, something like the flu but worse, that makes regular attendance at work difficult. But to win a case on that basis you need to have your doctor's support. |

I recently was diagonosed with Primary bilirary cirrhosis. I find myself unable to work, as I am always tired, dizzy and sick to my stomach, not to mention the pain I deal with throughout my body. I am only 42. At what point do I apply for disibility, and how do I go about it. Any information you can give me would be helpful. I live in CT. Thanks. |

File right now. Most, but not all, doctors define cirrhosis in such a way that if you diagnosed with it, you are disabled. For them, cirrhosis, whatever other words are attached to it, means that you liver is so damaged that it cannot keep your blood chemistry in such balance that you can function on a predictable basis. |
